Loraine Umi Hugo is a proud Chicagoan, fantasy author, traveler, and dreamer who believes magic exists between the stars and on the page. When she’s not writing emotional slow burns, morally gray characters, or building new worlds from scratch, she’s probably planning her next trip with her service Pomeranian Honey, looking for the coolest new experience, or shamelessly reading copious amounts of smut.
Her pen name came from two people in her life whom she wanted to honor. Loraine is the middle name of a dear friend who passed from ALS. Hugo comes from the name of one of her closest friends in Japan, who used to spend all school holidays with her in South Korea. Umi means ocean in Japanese, which is significant because she lived in Okinawa, where the ocean is most beautiful.
She draws inspiration from her time living in South Korea and Japan, where the blend of culture, mythology, and city lights continues to shape the stories she tells. Her debut fantasy novel, A City of Stars and Betrayal, is just the beginning of a much larger universe filled with secrets, romance, and rebellion.
